I’m Jan Esser (he/him), a Cologne-based graphic designer working under the alias prettygory. Since 2018, I’ve been crafting bold and experimental visual identities rooted in Swiss design principles. My work spans branding, print design, and visual identities, with a process that blends physical and digital techniques to create designs that feel both tangible and immersive.
Drawing inspiration from contemporary art, culture, and analog media, I approach each project with a hands-on method—printing typographic and image components, collaging them, and then re-digitalizing the results. Even when the final product is digital, I aim to simulate the aesthetics of physical media, incorporating elements like halftone textures, film grain, and packaging imitations to add depth and authenticity.
After an early career designing identities for musicians & creatives, and working at a marketing agency in Cologne, I spent time at an agency in Hamburg specializing in XR experiences and extended reality storytelling for brands. Since returning to Cologne in late 2024, I’ve been back to freelancing, collaborating with clients who value a bold yet refined visual approach.
Beyond design, I’m passionate about analog photography and collecting vinyl and cassette tapes—a love for tangible media that naturally finds its way into my creative work.
Let’s collaborate.
